Knowledge A–Z
- Abrasion resistance: a measure of the foil surface’s resistance against subjecting a machine to excessive load.
- Anilox roll: also called a screen roll. It transfers ink in the flexographic printing process, but is also sometimes used in gravure printing in combination with coatings.
- Adhesion: bonding between ink layers and the substrate.
- Calender: smooths the foil and influences its gloss level
- Checkoff: the guiding of material at the start of the printing process
- Chemical resistance: resilience against cleaning agents, water and other substances encountered in furniture use.
- Chrome roller: engraved rotogravure cylinder used to transfer the design
- Coating: application of protective or functional layers – usually using coatings
- Coating application: applying protective – or effect coatings
- Color balance: the interplay of colors to achieve a natural-looking décor
- Color management: managing colors to ensure consistent shades across different print runs
- Color reception: the ability of the substrate to absorb the printing ink
- Cups: engraved depressions in the chrome roller for ink transfer
- Cutting: cutting the foil web into roll or sheet formats
- Cylinder: main component of the rotogravure press for ink transfer
- Deaeration: process to remove air bubbles from inks or coatings
- Decor development: design and technical implementation of the décor – often based on natural templates
- Drying: evaporation of solvents between color stations
- Edge quality: cleanliness and strength of the cut foil edge
- Engraving depth: depth of the cups in the chrome roller – affecting ink transfer
- Finish foil: finished décor foil for furniture finishing
- Finishing: additional effects such as embossing – matte/gloss combinations
- Flash edges: unwanted print defects caused by roller pressure
- Follow-up control: quality assurance during the production process
- Gloss level: measure of the surface shine of the foil (matte to high gloss)
- Haptics: the tactile texture of the foil (e.g., wood grain)
- Hardener: component of coatings that increases mechanical resistance
- Idler pulleys: guide the material through the printing press
- Inking roller: transfers the ink onto the chrome roller
- Inkjet proof: digital test print for color matching before engraving
- In-line coating: application of the coating directly during the printing process
- Intensity: color depth and vibrancy of the décor
- Job change: quick décor changing during the production process
- Joule: unit of measurement – relevant for the energy input in drying units
- Just-in-time: flexible, fast production for current market demands
- Machine/roller synchronization: Synchronization of all rollers during the printing process.
- Machine speed: production speed in meters per minute
- Multicolor printing: printing with multiple color stations for realistic décors
- Off-line coating: application of the coating separately occurs after the printing process
- Offset: register offset between colors
- Opacity: coverage of the printed foil
- Pattern repeat: the distance at which the décor repeats
- Pigments: color-imparting components of the printing ink.
- Pre-treatment: preparation of the printing material for optimal ink adhesion
- Print form: the engraved cylinder that transfers the print image
- Print image: the visible result of the printing process on the foil
- Printing material: the material to be printed on – usually specially coated paper
- Profiling: fine surface texture created by coating or embossing
- Protective coating: seals and protects the décor
- Quality assurance: continuous monitoring of color, registration and surface quality
- Register: accuracy of color alignment
- Repeat: length of the repeating décor pattern
- Reproducibility: consistent print quality in reprints
- Roller printing: printing process using rotating rollers
- Rotogravure: printing process using engraved rollers
- Running meters: unit of measurement indicates the length of foil produced
- Shading: creating depth effects and color gradations
- Solvents: carriers of the printing ink that evaporate in the dryer
- Substrate: the printing material (e.g.: décor paper)
- Substrate surface: characteristics of the material – affecting ink reception
- Surface resistance: protection against scratches, UV radiation and chemicals
- Tensile tension: control of web tension during the printing process
- Tinting: fine adjustment of color areas.
- UV resistance: protection against fading from insolation.
- Web tension: control of material tension during the printing process to ensure a clean print image
- Wet-on-wet printing: consecutive ink applications without intermediate drying
- Winder: unit for winding and unwinding the foil material
- XY registration: precise positioning of the print image
- Xylography: historical engraving technique – origin of wood décor reproduction
- Yellowing: discoloration caused by UV exposure or material aging
- Y value: brightness parameter in the Lab color space for color control
